Is it bad that I read the writing instead of the actual first page?

I worry about Kevin Smith. His creative output has not been very good, and I'm sure there's immense pressure (both from him and others) to keep "doing that Kevin Smith magic," whatever it is.
We can see it in the weight gain, the oddly pathetic and self-abusive tweets (I stopped following him after one too many utterly crude statements -- and I'm certainly not one to shy from crudeness). I think he's a sensitive soul with a huge heart. But there's that and the perception of him as this smart ass, and however both filter through his own insecurities.
I think he's lost is way. And he's not the only one. We all do. If you haven't, then you may not be taking the risks you should.
I really hope he gets back to whatever form of artistic expression that means the most to him. Maybe it's low-budget indie films again. Or something completely different.

daveed,
I feel the same way. I've had the opportunity to meet him many times, and he's such a nice and grateful guy to everyone he meets, but he always has a sort of anxiety about things. Last time I saw him I told him to just keep doing what he wants to do and not let any of us push him one way or another, that we'd support him if he just did that. It's strange that every time someone says something like that to him, he seems on the verge of tears because he's so thankful. He's such a good guy.
He seems to be having a good time with Smodcast, and I think it'll help him keep it together.

Smith is a strange aberration... I also think he's immensely talented (I'm a 'dialog' guy so he's always tripped my trigger...) but he made the mistake along the way to cease embracing WHO HE IS.
And who is he?
Some wiseacre from Jersey who grew up, like many of us, on comics, blockbusters, too much TV, and hours at the mall.
That being said, I think when he's tried to "mature," he's done so splendidly. (I'm sure I'm in the minority but I for one LOVED Jersey Girl... but I've got a lot of kids so I suppose I'm a prime target for something like that...)
Like Woody Allen, he's a PERSONA and that comes across in all of his projects. The choice ahead of him is either embrace it and keep doing his thing or make a clean break from his past and crank out studio action or horror flicks or whatever. It would seem he wants it both ways and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like that.
Still, I for one would miss the parade of slackers espousing wisdom in the form of dick jokes.
