My fellow GITS Club Members. I'm going to start something new next week; stop watch writing. Whenever I work on new material, edit old material for new drafts or spend time marketing, I'm going to click a stop watch and keep a running tab. Then re-post on Monday with my totals.
It's a way of being accountable, and pushing and challenging myself. So if you're interested, any GITS Club Member is welcome to participate.
Acceptable Categories:
1) New projects: Writing scenes on paper, creating character bios, outlining, 1st draft, Polish drafts to reach an acceptable level of completion.
2) Edit drafts: incorporating coverage notes, updating/improving previous scripts.
3) Marketing: Acquiring information on prod co., agents, talent, and managers, writing query letters.
Sample of what I'm going to post NEXT Monday:
New projects: 12.75 hrs. Edit drafts: 14.5 hrs. Marketing: 7 hrs.
Sound interesting?

That sounds like quite the creative take on writing. I like the idea of being held accountable of the hours (or minutes in my case ) that actually gets spent on writing. A lot of the time my mind is going and going, but not enough of it goes on paper. I'd be willing to try it out.

Glad to hear you're interested, Dave243, One quick caveat. When accounting for time only account for projects you hope to one day sell. Thus any frivolous writing doesn't count on your totals. At least I'm going to count that on mine... It's never bad to work on your skills, and schmooze, but what I'd like to see this exercise keep track of is time you're pouring into projects you'd like to one day sell. Maybe I should have included this in the original post, but I didn't think about it until later. - E.C. Henry from Bonney Lake, WA. Currently stop watch total: Edit: 1 hr (new -- just this morning!) New projects: 1.25 hr (after morning edit)

Cool idea!
There's a program called "Rescue Time" that you might be interested in. It keeps track of how much time is spent on everything on your computer. If you don't move your mouse or touch a key for a while, it assumes you've left your computer and, when you come back, it'll ask you what you did so it can categorize the missing time. The program provides all kinds of graphs, so you can see how much time you spend on entertainment, work, websites, etc.
Apart from the monthly fee, the biggest downside is that it was designed primarily for businesses, not individuals. But it can work for individuals, too.

Thanks for the responce, tonym.
"Rescue Time" isn't where I was going with this. Trying to be accountable. Challenging myself to build up my writing muscles and be disciplined is.

Rescue Time would tell you how many minutes you spent on Final Draft (or whatever) on any given day. Basically, it's an automatic stopwatch.
Anyhow, good luck with what you're doing!

New: 5.5 hrs. Edit: 0.0 Marketing: 0.0 Exercise: 0.5 hrs. Research: 2.5 hrs.
* Spent 2.5 + hours at the Tacoma Public Library to "feed the muse on the script I'm working on, and get some extra research work in on a script I'm thinking about writing. Side note: libraries can be very dangerous places lots of homeless people there -- and sexual deviants! Beware: the library. It just doesn't seem right saying that, but it's true.
Goals for 4-11 through 4-18 New: 6 hrs. Edit: 3 hrs. Exercise: 3 hrs.
* I've got a new job that starts tomorrow, so I probably won't be visiting the GITS Board in the mornings, on the weekdays, anymore. Got an interview for what looks to be a very good job on Tuesday too. (Fingers crossed..) Anyway, before work I think I need to get back and hunkered down and just focus on writing. Will be checking this board after work, though. ;D
