Say it ain’t so, Joe! Another piece of my youth has passed. I can’t tell you the number of hours spent in front of that old black and white Muntz TV daydreaming about being Davie’s sidekick. But, damn! Davy Crockett? For those of you too young to remember – and I’m positive it is the majority – Davey was a staple of TV programming in the 50s. Fess Parker, who starred as the frontiersman, died at the age of 85 at his home in Santa Ynez. Boy, what childhood memories: coonskin caps; Davy Crockett lunch boxes; toy Old Betsy rifles; and buckskin shirts. But Davey Crockett!? Who’da thunk it? I guess we are all getting older by the day and that’s a good thing ‘cause it beats the alternative. Brings up a relevant question: who was/is your childhood hero on the small screen and/or the big screen? Did they influence your desire to write? Let me know as you, Keep Writing!

Born in '70 so I missed the coonskin hat trend however...
Disney packaged up a few episodes and released them to theaters in the mid-70's and I saw Davy and Georgie take on the 'wild frontier' in a double feature with a rerelease of The Jungle Book.
I do recall enjoying it but, of course, by then, the Star Wars thing had taken hold of the souls of American youth and I wanted to be Han Solo much more than Davy Crockett... chose a blaster and a Wookie over a coonskin cap!
It IS disconcerting when our childhood heroes pass on by. I remember when Bob Keeshan and Fred Rogers died... you do feel a piece of yourself croaking right along with 'em!
